The sun is high, the sky is blue, and today, you have no work to do. So, what better way to while away a few spare hours than with a leisurely game of golf?
Amble around the fairway, practice your backswing, and perfect your putt – according to to PGA Tour Star Adam Scott you will have to become an expert green-reader to improve your putting skills, so this may take some time!
Patience is certainly a virtue when it comes to golf, as it’s not the easiest of games to master. That said, plenty of people still pick up their clubs and head for the course at every available opportunity.
Once deemed to be the domain of middle-aged business folk, golfing is now enjoyed by a variety of people. A report commissioned by the R&A indicated that there’s an opportunity for golf to grow in terms of participation numbers and income generation if more women, girls and families could be attracted to playing the sport.
What’s a Discerning Female Golfer to Wear?
With more women and girls being encouraged to take up the sport it’s likely we will see an even wider range of women’s golfing apparel on the market. Browse online and you will already find a good selection of ladies golf pants, ladies golf shirts, and ladies golf skorts, to name but a handful of golfing garments.
With so much choice it can be difficult (especially if you’re new to golf) to figure out what to wear. Alongside mastering this challenging game you’re also going to have to master the art of selecting ladies golf attire.
Dressing by The Rules
Golf clubs and courses are synonymous with strict dress codes (especially the more exclusive clubs), but as of late there has been a rumble of dissention in the ranks.
Certain clubs and courses have relaxed their dress code restrictions regarding women’s golf clothes, in bid to entice members. We’re seeing shorter hems, bare thighs, polos abandoned for sleeveless tops, and a smattering of bright colours and patterns.
Some golf enthusiasts, such as Cathy Garbin – director of Golf 20/20 initiative, welcome a more relaxed approach to women’s golf attire. Cathy describes strict dress codes as a barrier to the game, and believes relaxing restrictions will promote inclusiveness.
However, not all are in agreement with this causal approach to golf wear – many clubs and courses (and golfers), prefer to stick with tradition and adhere to a conventional golfing dress code. It’s wise to check dress restrictions beforehand – flaunting the rules could result in non-admittance – embarrassing for you and those you are with.
Dress code aside, choose ladies golf apparel that’s comfy, good quality, and affordable. You will also want to go for golf clothing that makes you look and feel great.
Ladies Golf Clothes for Comfort and Fit
You’re going to be outdoors, swinging your arms around, and walking (a lot), so it stands to reason you will need to invest in women’s golf clothes that are easy to wear.
Opt for garments that fit well but allow you to move freely (certain garments are manufactured with elastic material to provide a better fit). Baggy / and overly loose clothing simply doesn’t work on the golf course.
Ladies Golf Clothes for Function and Cost
Ideally, ladies golf clothes should be made of lightweight, breathable and durable fabric that’s been designed to thwart sweat. No-one wants to feel hot and stuffy whilst taking a shot (or show off unsightly sweat patches for everyone on the course to see).
Golf clothing has a reputation for being pricy, in fact, certain garments are twice as expensive as tennis clothing and casual wear. But you don’t have to pay over the odds for good quality gear – it’s always wise to shop around and compare cost if you’re seeking a good deal.
Fairway Fashion – Pulsating Prints to No-Nonsense Neutrals.
The fairway is no catwalk, but there are certain standards golfers are expected to adhere to, and there’s no excuse for not striding out looking your best! Men are inclined to favour a smart/ casual approach to their golf outfit, women tend to opt for the same.
However, the days of sticking to a sensible non-descript polo and slacks are over – there’s no need to be overly conservative with your golf garb. Popular brands are casting a fresh eye on ladies golfing apparel, we’re talking pulsating prints to brighten up the green and no-nonsense neutrals when you want to show your mettle.
You don’t have to blindly follow the latest trends to look good, instead resolve to look for golf clothing that suits your unique shape and style, and make sure your golfing attire is never just par for the course.
What to Wear When You Tee Off
Golf dresses, golf shirts, golf skirts, golf shorts, or even a mix of the two – golf skorts, the list goes on. Ring the changes by investing in a few key pieces for the perfect mix-and-max golfing wardrobe, let’s explore your options:
Keep Cool and Look Hot in Women’s Golf Skirts
Skirts are great if you want to keep cool and get your legs out to bask in the warmth of the sun. However, skirt length can be a controversial issue – some clubs and courses make it very clear that skirts should be of certain length e.g. just below the knee.
You might consider specifying skirt length to be a little old-fashioned, but certain clubs are keen to uphold precise values (and to prevent patrons being put off their swing by golfer’s derriere poking out). Check in advance to see what’s permissible.
If you do decide to opt for a golf skirt there are some great ones on the market (in an array of colours and designs). A short A-line will allow flexibility as you move, whilst a skirt made from material with moisture wicking technology will keep you feeling fresh.
Flatter Your Pins with Women’s Golf Shorts
When the weather’s good you might want to get your pins out, and that’s where golfing shorts are a great option. Go for comfortable and flattering shorts, and opt for soft, breathable, stretchy, and lightweight fabric.
Pockets are handy, and belt loops are a must if you want to tuck in a polo and don a smart leather belt to finish the look. Golf shorts made from tech sports performance fabric are a great idea– we’re talking material that dries quickly, locks away moisture and keeps you feeling fresh and dry.
Women’s Golf Skorts – A Warm Welcome to the Golf Skirt / Golf Short Hybrid
Women’s golf skorts offer the best of both worlds to a female golfer – as the name suggests this garment is a cross between a pair of golf shorts and a golf skirt.
A fabric panel covers the front of the shorts – giving the appearance you’re wearing a skirt. The golf skort offers peace of mind when you’re leaning or bending – you can relax and enjoy playing, rather than worry about flashing your knickers to the players behind!
Skorts are also good for other sports, such as running and tennis (we do like a multi-tasking item). Material wise, opt for polyester and spandex. Both are ideal for comfort and breathability. Keep an eye out for design features too – such as mesh pockets and reflective details.
Dress Up Your Game with A Stylish Golf Dress
If you love dresses and love golf, then why not combine the two for instant style and comfort? The golf dress is also a versatile item, wear it on the course and then head straight to the 19th hole.
Polyester and Spandex are great choices material wise – offering stretch, comfort and a great fit. There’s a plethora of designs available too, including plain, vibrant colours, pastels, patterns etc. You can opt for dresses with collars if you need to satisfy the dress code needs of your local course or club, or opt for a more relaxed style for more casual golfing.
Look out for extra design details such as mesh blocking and studs on the trim if you are keen to add a unique touch to your outfit. You can also go for a top to toe look – invest in a dress and matching visor for effortless style.
Women’s Golf Pants
The best option for ladies golf pants has to be lightweight and comfy chinos, khakis or cargos – comfort and laid-back style all in one. When the sun has got his hat on you could go shorter and opt for capri or cropped pants, when teamed with a smart polo this can make a great golf outfit.
Denim is a contentious issue – only the most casual of clubs or courses will entertain the idea of patrons rocking up in their jeans for a chilled out round of golf. Best to keep your denim for non-golf days just to be on the safe side. Even your best designer jeans just might just not cut it on the fairway.

Smarten Up with Collar and Short-Sleeves.
Time to check out that dress code again! Certain clubs and courses will request female members wear blouses with collars, or tops with sleeves that cover the shoulders. If you invest in these from the off you can’t go far wrong.
Course and clubs with less stringent rules will allow sleeveless tops, which are perfect for hot summer days. Many still have some form of collar, e.g. a traditional winged collar or a more contemporary mandarin collar.
Polo tops are amongst the favourite in terms of ladies golfing clothing, there’s such an array of designs and colours (stripes, patterns, floral motifs etc) – so you should easily be able to find a few to suit. Steer clear of oversize/baggy tops, halters and crop tops.
Material wise cotton is a cool option – go for pale colours such as pastel pink, white or baby blue if it’s a hot day (light colours soak up less heat from the sun). Do check out tops made from specialized material (designed to lock away sweat). Remember you will be walking a considerable distance and carrying your golf clubs so make sure you will not get too hot in the climate. You may also use a golf push cart to get yourself and the clubs around the course.

Go for a Top to Toe Look in a Stylish Golf Outfit
How about a golf shirt and a matching golf skirt for a complete outfit that shows off your golfing prowess? Your game might not be completely together but your look can be collectively chic! There’s been quite a debate on women’s golfing outfits – certain golfing professionals have even come under fire for their choice of “salacious” golfing attire.
Back in 2017 the LPGA released dress code restrictions which ruffled the feathers of professional golfer Paige Spiranac. Spiranac was so enraged by the new rules that she went on to pen an article “The Progression of Women’s Golf Is Plunging Further Than Our Necklines,” condemning the restrictions, and stating they would stifle the development of the women’s game.
Your Swing Might Not Be Perfect – But Your Golf Outfit Can Be!
Putting the discussion over fitting attire to one side, we can safely say that professional women golfers have a whole lot of style. What do Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, and Lexi Thompson have in common? All three are not only renowned top-class female professional golfers, but are also recognised as amongst the stylish women in golf.
Golf Magazine recently treated us to a piece called “Michelle Wie’s 4 Surefire Style Tips That You Need to Copy.” Allowing us to get the lowdown on the LPGA star’s style (and crazy shoe collection).
Chances are you won’t be able to match their fancy footwork, replicate their expert golfing grip, or imitate their skillful swing, but you can follow the lead of golf’s stylish female players – and dress to impress.
Take a look at the golf clothes offered by some of the brand leaders for a few super style ideas. We can’t possibly list them all here but a few examples include Adidas, Bermuda Sands, Cutter & Buck, DKNY, EP Pro, GG Blue, GolfHer, Greg Norman, Jamie Sadock, JoFit, Nancy Lopez, Nike, and Page & Tuttle.
A Work in Progress Golf Wardrobe
View your golf wardrobe as work in progress, you don’t have to rush out and buy a shedload of women’s golf attire in one go. If you’re new to golfing invest in a couple of staple items such as ladies golf pants, and ladies golf shirts to get you going – and build your selection from there.
Golf shoes are useful too, they can help you feel more stable as you take you shot, items such as these can be pricey but shop around to ensure you get the best deal. Once you have established a core wardrobe you can add a few more items.
Throw in a pair or two of women’s golf shorts or golf skorts, add a stylish yet practical golf dress and a couple of women’s golf skirts. Finish off your golf outfit with a visor or cap to protect your skin and eyes from the glare of the sun.
Looking good should be high on your list but remember to factor practicality and comfort into the equation too. Lightweight, breathable material is best, and look out for tech-performance moisture-wicking fabric designed to keep you fresh.
Your garments should also be stretchy enough to enable you to move freely, but need to fit well if you are going to play to the best of your abilities – baggy T-shirts will just get in the way! Fitted and tailored items also tend to look much smarter, giving you added confidence as you make your way to the first hole.
The days of overly stuffy golfing attire have moved on, you only have to check out women’s golfing fashion to see that! But you still need to abide by dress code rules if you want to play at certain clubs and courses.
Tradition dictates golf is not a game to be played in your scruffs or lounge-wear, so opt for smart casual if you want to look and feel the part.
